課程概述 |
Students will be introduced to various topics that are relevant, engaging, and helpful to college life. In addition to social and cultural issues, topics on Academic and professional English (English for Science, Technology, or Business) will be discussed. Additionally, students will be trained how to utilize on-line sources such as on-line dictionary, on-line corpora, and various language learning websites to sharpen English language skills. |

This course aims to enhance students’ English proficiency at the high-intermediate level through diverse and integrated class activities. |

課程要求 |
Students are required to:
(1) Attend classes. Two (2) points will be deducted from the student’s final grade for each absence that occurs without advance notification and teacher permission. If you want to take leave, please contact the TA by e.mail in advance.
(2) Actively participate in in-class activities, which will take the form of question-and-answer sessions, group discussion, written reports, on-line corpora training sessions, and other formats. The class will be taught mainly in English; students are encouraged to interact with the instructor, the TA, and their classmates in English.
(3) Complete three (3) essays throughout the semester. Essays that are handed after deadline will be deducted 30% of the grades.
(4) Complete the assignments from lab sessions which include OLCP listening
comprehension program (http://140.112.185.55/site/login) , COCA practice, and various grammar and writing practices.
(5) Complete the assignments and hand in the assignments to the TA in the beginning of each class meeting. The instructor will announce the assignment at the end of each class meeting and make email notification. Students are required to receive email notification from your NTU webmail.
(6) Actively participate in midterm and final presentation/performance. We will not have paper-based exams for this class, but students are expected to do “show and tell” (5 minutes) in the mid-term and the group drama performance (15 minutes) OR group presentation (15 minutes) in the final week. Students have to schedule a meeting with TA to discuss “show and tell” activity and a meeting with the instructor for the group drama performance (15 minutes) OR group presentation with powerpoint slides (15 minutes) activity. Guidelines and rubrics will be given later in the semester.
(7) Students will obtain 3 bonus points for giving one in-class academic oral presentation (5 minutes). You can sign up for the academic oral presentation during the first class. The slots are open in week 5 and week 6, Remember: Once you sign up for the presentation, you should try hard to keep the promise. If you have to cancel it or switch time, please inform the TA as early as possible.
(8) Hand in the portfolio which contains your essay writings and written assignments in the end of the semester. The checklist will be distributed.
